    Meet the Three Families of Rocks

    Believe it or not...

    Every rock on Earth belongs to one of three families.

    That's it.

    Once you understand these three, you'll never look at a mountain, river, or beach the same way again.

    Let's meet them.

    🔥 1. Igneous Rocks

    "Born from Fire"

    Igneous rocks begin life as molten rock (magma or lava).

    When that molten rock cools...

    A brand-new rock is born.

    Think of them as Earth's original construction workers.

    Examples:

    🖤 Obsidian

    ⚪ Granite

    🩶 Basalt

    🌋 Pumice

    Fun Fact:
    The Sierra Nevada Mountains are made mostly of granite that formed deep underground from giant magma chambers millions of years ago.

    🌊 2. Sedimentary Rocks

    "Built One Grain at a Time"

    Imagine rivers carrying tiny pieces of rock.

    Those grains settle.

    More pile on top.

    Pressure squeezes them together...

    And eventually they become solid rock.

    Nature's version of making the world's biggest layered cake.

    Examples:

    🟤 Sandstone

    ⚪ Limestone

    🟫 Shale

    Many fossils are found in sedimentary rocks because ancient plants and animals were buried by mud and sand before they could decay.

    If rocks kept photo albums...

    Sedimentary rocks would have the most pictures.

    🏔️ 3. Metamorphic Rocks

    "The Ultimate Makeover"

    Some rocks don't stay the same.

    Deep underground they're exposed to incredible heat and pressure.

    They don't melt...

    They transform.

    Like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly...

    Except with significantly fewer wings.

    Examples:

    ✨ Marble

    💚 Serpentinite

    ⚫ Slate

    🩶 Gneiss (pronounced "nice"... because geology enjoys keeping us humble.)

    A rock doesn't have to stay in one family forever.

    Granite can weather into sand.

    That sand can become sandstone.

    Sandstone can transform into quartzite.

    Quartzite can melt and become magma...

    Which cools into a brand-new igneous rock.

    It's called the Rock Cycle, and it's been running for billions of years.

    Earth is the ultimate recycler.
