🦖 Did Dinosaurs Ever See Your Rock?
It's one of the most common questions we hear at The Hidden Gem.
"Were dinosaurs around when this rock formed?"
The answer?
Sometimes... and sometimes not even close.
Let's play a game.
🌋 Obsidian
Dinosaurs? ❌ Nope.
Obsidian forms when lava cools extremely quickly after a volcanic eruption. Most obsidian you'll find is less than a few million years old, making it far too young for dinosaurs.
Translation:
A T. rex never admired your obsidian arrowhead.
💜 Amethyst
Dinosaurs? ✅ Usually!
Many amethyst deposits formed 100 to 300+ million years ago, which means plenty of dinosaurs were roaming the Earth while these crystals were quietly growing underground.
Imagine a giant sauropod walking overhead while your crystal slowly formed beneath its feet.
🌈 Agate
Dinosaurs? 🤔 Maybe!
Agates formed during many different periods in Earth's history.
Some agates are older than dinosaurs.
Some formed while dinosaurs ruled the planet.
Others are much younger.
Every agate has its own story.
🌲 Petrified Wood
Dinosaurs? 🦕 Very possible!
Many pieces of petrified wood came from forests that grew while dinosaurs were alive.
Some dinosaurs may have literally walked through those ancient forests before the trees became stone.
That's about as close to time travel as you can get.
⛰️ Granite
Dinosaurs? ❌ Not even close.
Much of the granite in places like the Sierra Nevada formed 80 to 120 million years ago, while some granite elsewhere on Earth is over 3 billion years old.
That means some granite was already ancient before the very first dinosaur hatched.
Let that sink in.
🤯 Hidden Gem Mind Bender
If Earth's entire history were a 24-hour day...
🦕 Dinosaurs wouldn't appear until around 10:40 PM.
👣 Modern humans wouldn't arrive until the last few seconds before midnight.
We've barely stepped onto the stage.
The rocks have been here almost the entire show.
