1. Every Rock Looks Interesting.

Curiosity is a superpower in this hobby.

2. Don't Judge a Rock by Its Outside.

Some of the most spectacular agates, thunder eggs, and geodes look like ordinary gray potatoes until they're cut open.

Nature loves surprises.

3. The Best Finds Usually Require Walking.

The parking lot has already been picked over.

If you're willing to hike just a little farther than everyone else, your odds of finding something special go way up.

4. Always Look Down...

But Don't Forget to Look Up.

Amazing rocks are under your feet.

Poison oak, low branches, cliffs, rattlesnakes, and uneven ground are everywhere else.

A great rock isn't worth a trip to the emergency room.

5. Bring More Water Than You Think You'll Need.

The rocks have been waiting millions of years.

You don't have to race them.

Take breaks.

Stay hydrated.

Enjoy the journey.

6. Ask Permission.

Respect private property.

Follow collecting rules.

Leave every place better than you found it.

Being a great rockhound also means being a great steward of the land.

7. Take Pictures Before You Pick It Up.

You'll never regret having a photo showing exactly where and how you found an amazing specimen.

Years later, those pictures become part of the story.

8. You Don't Need to Bring Everything Home.

Take the exceptional specimens.

Leave plenty for someone else to discover.

A good collection is built with quality...

Not quantity.

9. Every Rock Has Something to Teach You.

Even if it's not valuable.

Every specimen helps you recognize textures, minerals, colors, crystal habits, weathering, and geology.

There really are no wasted finds.

10. The Best Part Isn't the Rocks.

It's the adventure.

The sunrise.

The conversations.

The quiet.

The excitement when someone yells,

"I FOUND SOMETHING!"

That's what keeps us coming back.

The rocks are simply the souvenirs.
