🪨 Meet the Rockhound's Starting Five

Every rockhound has to start somewhere.

Think of these as the Hall of Fame rookies. Learn these five rocks and minerals, and you'll recognize a surprising amount of what you find in the field.

1️⃣ Quartz

✨ The world's overachiever.

Quartz is one of the most common minerals on Earth. It comes in dozens of colors and varieties, including clear quartz, smoky quartz, amethyst, citrine, rose quartz, and more.

Fun Fact: Your watch, phone, and computer all depend on quartz to keep accurate time.

2️⃣ Agate

🌈 Nature's jawbreaker.

Agates are famous for their colorful bands that formed one microscopic layer at a time inside ancient volcanic cavities.

Every agate is unique. No two are exactly alike.

Fun Fact: Some agates took millions of years to grow... and most of us can't wait five minutes for our coffee.

3️⃣ Jasper

🎨 Earth's original abstract artist.

Jasper comes in almost every color imaginable because tiny amounts of different minerals paint each piece differently.

Landscape Jasper, Ocean Jasper, Picture Jasper...

Mother Nature apparently never ran out of ideas.

4️⃣ Obsidian

🌋 Frozen lava.

Unlike most rocks, obsidian doesn't have crystals because lava cooled so quickly it became natural volcanic glass.

It's so sharp that modern surgeons have even experimented with obsidian blades for incredibly fine cuts.

Yes... it's basically Earth's ninja rock.

5️⃣ Calcite

🧪 The fizz champion.

Put a drop of weak acid on calcite, and it bubbles.

That's one of the fastest ways geologists identify it.

Please don't pour vinegar on every rock you own...

Your kitchen and your collection will both appreciate the restraint.
